Chapter Thirteen

Mia

Campus was milling with students rushing to get to their classes. I hefted the backpack over my shoulders to blend in and put on my aviators. I searched the campus map for Pendleton Dormitories since I’d only been there one time in person. It was just two buildings away from the marquee.

“Hmm, pretty close to Lucy’s dorm,” I said to myself. “Good, I can kill two birds with one stone.”

I trotted over the pasture towards the entrance and was greeted with cat calls. I gave the jocks the finger and kept going until I came across the elevator and rode it to the third floor.

Once on the floor, I walked over some drunk coeds sleeping it off. I guess I wasn’t missing much. I did not miss waking up in strange places after drinking too much on campus.

I walked down the short passage way and knocked on the door.

“Who is it?” Paco asked.

“It’s me,” I said.

He opened the door and pulled me into a bear hug. “Hey chica. It’s been a long time.”

Paco was large and solid much like the jocks I had ran into, but he was one of the nicest guys I’d ever met.

I smiled. “I’d come more often, if not for the venue.”

“It’s not that bad, the guys are meatheads but harmless.”

“You fit right in, then.”

“Haha. Get in here before I change my mind.”

He grabbed a spring water from his mini fridge and handed me one.

“Not that I’m not happy to see you, but like you said you wouldn’t be here unless it couldn’t be done over the phone.”

“You know me well.” I reached inside the front pouch of my backpack and pulled out the broken piece of equipment. “Can you salvage it?”

“A bug. What happened?”

“I left it at the mansion, but the son of a bitch found it and made sure I knew it.”

“What do you mean?”

“Oh, he showed up on my doorstep to return my wristlet.”

“At your apartment?”

“Yes. Paco, breathe.”

He expelled a heavy sigh. “I don’t like it, Mia. You’re always hunting alone and then you show up at a mansion full of them. You’re taking too many risks even for someone as good as you. You’re gonna get yourself killed.”

I shook my head. “I’ve trained way too hard to let that happen. Now, can you recover anything from it?”

“Depends on when he smashed it. I should be able to recover anything transmitted before the damage.”

“Do it.”

“What’s the deal? You know where a whole nest of vampires are. Why don’t you just kill them?”

“Because...I know you think all vampires are evil but we were surrounded by them and they didn’t attack us.” I pointed at the bug. “I just want to hear what they were saying.”

“So one of them brought this back to you—at your apartment—and you think that wasn’t a threat?”

“No, I’m telling you. He’s different and if he’s not a threat, then I can’t in good conscience slay him and his—”

“Nest?”

“Family.”

He shook his head, but proceeded to pull up the data. “You are loca.
